The hardware detects the voltage change on the telephone line when the handset is lifted. It uses this change to reliably start and stop recordings

Unlike voice activated switching you will not have calls broken into multiple files when there are pauses or merged when you make the next call too quickly. Recordings begin when the handset is lifted and closed when it is put down!
